Auricle inspection
Looking for any deformities, masses, skin lesions, discharge
Auricle/tragus/mastoid palpation
Assessing for any tenderness, nodules, edema
Ear canals (otoscopic exam)
Looking for any discharge, foreign bodies, erythema, edema, cerumen, masses
Tympanic membranes (otoscopic exam)
Looking at color, contour, malleus/umbo/cone of light, any perforations
Gross auditory test
Finger rub, making sure symmetrical gross hearing
Weber and Rinne test
Weber: Sound equal on both sides vs. lateralization
Rinne: Air conduction vs. bone conduction
-used to differentiate types of hearing loss
External nose inspection
Looking for any asymmetry, lesions, deformities, epistaxis (bleeding)
Nares inspection
Looking for patency (no blockage) bilaterally, nasal flaring, any masses
Nasal mucosa inspection
*WITH LIGHT/SPECULUM
Looking for proper color, any swelling, bleeding, exudate, ulcers, polyps, discharge
Septum inspection
*WITH LIGHT/SPECULUM
Looking for any septal deviation, inflammation, perforations, or epistaxis source (bleeding/cuts)
Nose palpation
Feeling for any tenderness or masses
Sinus palpation
(frontal, maxillary, ethmoid) assessing for tenderness
Lips inspection
Checking for proper color/any pigmentation, ulcers, white patches, or nodules
Oral mucosa inspection
Looking for proper color, any areas of pigmentation, ulcers, white patches, or nodules
Gums inspection
Looking for proper color and any swelling, ulceration, bleeding, or retraction
