Censorship
The suppression of words, images, or ideas that are considered offensive by a particular government or group.
Deregulation
The removal of rules, regulations and laws previously imposed on an industry. Often welcomed as the removal of monopoly rights which improve competition and opportunity, they can also lead to the weakening of protection for workers and consumers.
Diaspora
The dispersion or spread of a group of people from their original homeland.
Ecological Footprint
The measure of human demand on nature. ie. the quantity of nature it takes to support people or an economy.
Ethical consumption
A type of consumer activism based on the concept of ‘dollar voting’ which means that every time you spend money you are effectively voting on the type of society you would like to live in.
Extremism
Beliefs that most people consider unreasonable and unacceptable.
Fair Trade
A way of buying and selling that makes certain that the people who produce the goods receive a fair price. It brings a better standard of living for poor farmers in developing countries.
First Nations
The indigenous people who lived in Canada before the arrival of Europeans.
Gender inequality index
A measurement of gender disparity that was introduced in 2010. It considers the reproductive health, empowerment, and economic status of women.
Gini Coefficient
A single number aimed at measuring the degree of inequality in an area. It is most often used to measure how far a country’s wealth or income distribution deviates from a totally equal distribution. The line at 45 degrees thus represents perfect equality of incomes.
Human Development Index (HDI)
Devised by the UN to show how far people are benefiting from economic growth. Links GDP to education and health.
Criticisms:
- Measures ranking rather than absolute idea of development
- Biased towards economic/ wealth-dependent factors
Income inequality
The extent to which income is distributed in an uneven manner among a population.
Localism
Generally supports local production and consumption of goods, local control of government, and promotion of local history, culture and identity.
Lorenz curve
A line graph that portrays the (un)evenness of a geographical distribution. The vertical axis is cumulative percentage of the variable being examined. The horizontal axis is the rank order of the values. A perfectly even distribution of values will give a 45 degree line from left to right. The more a line diverges from this, the more uneven or highly concentrated the variable is.
Open borders
A border that enables free movement of people between different jurisdictions with limited or no restrictions.
