Storming of the Bastille
July 14 1789, storming of an armory that was symbol of king Louis XVI despotic policy, marks the beginning of the French revolution. Dismantled the armory brick by brick
American Declaration of Independence
affirmed the enlightenment’s natural rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness and declared the colonies to be free and independent states absolved form all allegience to the British crown. approved July 4 1776
United States Constitution
established a central government and divides it into legislative, executive and supreme court. first 10 amendments were the bill of rights based off the natural rights policy.
France’s “old regime”
How the government was structured prior to French revoulution. First estate was clergy, second estate was nobility, 3rd estate was commoners.
Louis XVI
incapable with understanding the depth of the economic crisis and costly wars and extravegant expenitchures almost bankrupted France
Estates-General
nobility, clergy, commoners. 1st 2nd 3rd. clergy and nobility could out vote commoners
National Assembly
made up of the third estate that drew their own constitution after estates general devided to vote by group
Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen
basic liberties proclaimed freedom and equal rights for all men and access to public office by talent. Everyone could take part in the legislative process. Freedom of pree and sppech and made arbatrary arrests illigal.
Olympe de Gouges
playwrite that argued for womens rights. wrote decloration of the rights of women and the female citizen.
Committee of Public Safety
dominated by Maximilien Robespierre which was in charge of france to protect it from invasion. raised an army of 650,00 to push the the allies past the Rhrine
Maximilien Robespierre
lead the committee of public safety. was too zealous in purifying the politic of the corrupt. was sent to the guilitine himself
Reign of Terror
16,000 people guilotined and charged as being internal enemies to the republic
Napoleon Bonaparte
from corsica lead a coup that brought him to power 10 years after the revoulution. Was a bragedier general by 25. educated in the enlightenment works from Rousseau. Expanded his empire across europe and spread the ideals of the french revoulution such as the abolishment of privligages of the nobility and clergy and granted equality in the eyes of the law and religious toleration
Napoleon’s Civil Code
preserved most of the revoulutionary gains by recognizing the principle of equality of all citizens before the law, the abolition of serfdom and feudalism and relgious toleration. Property rights were also protected. Made divorce more difficult for women and when they marred their property became control of their husbands
