You are telephoning Hotel Serenity in Lake Como to make a booking for a week during the summer holidays. (click on the photo for potential inspiration.)
You: In Italian, greet the person at hotel reception and tell them that you’d like to book a room.
Hotel reception (answering the phone): “Buongiorno, Albergo Serenità”
“Good morning, Hotel Serenity”
You: “Buongiorno. Vorrei prenotare una camera, per favore.”
“Good day, I’d like to book a room for two please.”
Hotel reception: “Per quando?”
“For when?”
You: In Italian, tell hotel reception that you would like to book a room for a week from Monday 12th July.
You: “Per una settimana da lunedi dodici luglio.”
“For a week from Monday July 12th”
Hotel reception: “Può restare in linea, che controllo subito…“
- “Please hold the line, I will check now…”*

Hotel reception: “È qui?”
Are you there?
You: “Sì”
Hotel reception: “Abbiamo una camera, una camera matrimoniale”
You: In Italian, ask how much the room is per night.
You: “Quanto costa la camera per notte?”
“How much is the room per night?”
Hotel reception: “Allora, in quel periodo è alta stagione, quindi costa 250 euro a notte.”
“In that period it is high season, therefore the cost is 250 euro per night”.
You: In Italian, ask if the room rate includes the hotel breakfast buffet.
You: “E` inclusa la prima colazione?”.
“It includes the breakfast buffet?”
Hotel reception: “Si`, certo e anche l’uso del centro benessere.”
- “Yes, of course, and it also includes use of the wellness centre.”*
- note: many Italian hotels have use of the hotel pool, spa, saunas and steam room as part of the room rate. Massages and beauty treatments are usually extra.*
You: In Italian, agree to the room rate and ask if the room has a view of the lake.
You: “Va bene. La camera ė con vista sul lago?”
“Ok. The room has a view of the lake?”
Hotel reception: “Si, la camera è al terzo livello con vista lago.”
“Yes, the room is on the third level with a lake view.”
You: In Italian, tell hotel reception that you are catching a train from Milan to Como and ask if the hotel can pick you up from the station.
You: “Prenderemo un treno da Milano a Como il 11th. Il treno arriva a Como alle 2 pm, è possibile per l’hotel organizzare un transfer dalla stazione all’hotel?”
“We’re catching a train from Milano to Como on the 11th. The train arrives at Como at pm, is it possible for the hotel to arrange a transfer from the station to te hotel?”
Ticket office attendant: “Certamente”.
“Certainly”
Ticket office attendant: “Quando stai per arrivare alla stazione di Como, assicurati di essere vicino alla porta con i bagagli pronti. Il treno non si ferma a lungo e se non scendi in tempo vi ritroverete alla fermata successiva che è in Svizzera. “
“When you are about to arrive at Como station, make sure that you are near the door with your luggage ready. The train does not stop for long and if you don’t get off in time you will find yourself at the next stop, which is in Switzerland.”
Hotel reception: Va bene. Allora mi serve solo un anticipo di cento euro, il Suo nome, numero di telefono e un indirizzo email. Per il pagamento dell’anticipo Le mando una mail con tutti i dettagli.
