At the train station
You are at the Perugia train station and would like to catch a train to Florence.
You: In Italian, greet the ticket office attendant and ask for some information.
You: “Buongiorno, vorrei un’informazione per favore.”
“Good morning, I’d like some some information please”
Ticket office attendant: “Sì, prego”
“Yes, please”
You: In Italian, ask what time the next train for Florence leaves.
You: “Buongiorno, a che ora parte il prossimo treno per Firenze?”
“At what time does the next train for Florence leave?”
Ticket office attendant: “Parte alle 11:44.”
“It leaves at 11:44am.”
You: In Italian, ask what type of train it is.
You: “Che tipo di treno è?”
“What type of train is it?”
Ticket office attendant: “E` un regionale veloce, senza cambi.”
“It is a fast regional train without any changes”.
You: In Italian, say “Good, please give me a first class ticket to Florence then.”
You: “Bene. Mi dia un biglietto di prima classe per Firenze allora”.
“Good, (please *) give me a first class ticket to Florence then.”
Ticket office attendant: “Solo andata, o andata e ritorno?”
- “One way or return?”*
- Note: * Mi dia un biglietto… uses the Italian polite form, it is one of the polite ways of asking without using the word please.*
You: In Italian, say “One way thank you. How much is it?”
You: “Solo andata, grazie. Quanto costa?”
“One way thank you. How much is it?”
Ticket office attendant: “Euro 22,10”
“€ 22.10”
You: In Italian, ask “From what platform does the train leave?”
You: “Da che binario parte?”
“From what platform does the train leave?”
Ticket office attendant: “Parte dal binario sette”.
“It leaves from platform 7.”
You: In Italian, say “Thank you, good day”
You: “Grazie, buongiorno”
“Thank you, good day.* “
Ticket office attendant: “Prego. Buona giornata”.
- “You’re welcome, have a good day.”*
- Note: * A conversation at the ticket office is a more formal situation, so farewell words such as “boungiorno”, “arriverderci”, “arriverderla” and “bouna giornata” are the best words to use.*
- “Ciao” or “ciao ciao” can be used to say goodbye in an informal situation, but not at the ticket office.*
