English Yr09 Sum1 Flashcards
social class

Gender roles in society
How we’re expected to act, speak, dress, groom, and conduct ourselves based upon our assigned sex. Throughout the play we see the lack of power possessed by women.
civilisation Vs savagery
Without any rules or adults, the boys struggle with their moral compasses. Some try to establish rules and value the good of the group, whereas others follow their base instincts and act violently to obtain supremacy over others. The conch shell symbolises civilisation and the fire, savagery and destruction.
loss of innocence
As the boys progress from well-behaved, orderly children longing for rescue, to cruel, bloodthirsty hunters who have no desire to return to civilization, they naturally lose the sense of innocence that they possessed at the beginning of the novel. The beastie represents evil and a loss of childhood naivety and compliance with social norms.
