A

A

What is borrowing?

A

When words are taken from other languages. Such words also known as loan words. Many English words are taken from other languages. Eg guitar= Spanish. Prince= French. Safari = Swahili. Borrowing sometimes occurs when a new idea or product is introduced to English life E.g The Russian noun Vodka.
The political, economic and cultural power of USA is reflected in the increasing number of Amercianisms.
E.g movie, trash, the get go.
Borrowing is popular in foods such as burrata, sushi.

E.g “pyjama”= from hindi
“Ballet” =from French

A

These are names of products that have been trademarked.
We often use these proprietary names to identify all makes of a product. E.g hoover( for vacuum cleaner )

A

Some objects are given the name of the person invented or was first associated with the item.
E.g
