Metaphor
a way of describing something by referring to it as something different and suggesting that it has similar qualities to that
Simile
an expression that describes something by comparing it with something else, using the words ‘as’ or ‘like’, for example ‘as white as snow’
Personification
the representation of a thing or a quality as a person, in literature or art
Hyperbole
a way of describing something by saying it is much bigger, smaller, worse etc than it actually is SYN exaggeration
Theme
the main subject or idea in a piece of writing, speech, film etc
Analogy
something that seems similar between two situations, processes etc
Denotative
to mean something
Connotative
a quality or an idea that a word makes you think of that is more than its basic
Genre
formal a particular type of art, writing, music etc, which has certain features that all examples of this type share
Sarcasm
a way of speaking or writing that involves saying the opposite of what you really mean in order to make an unkind joke or to show that you are annoyed
Oxymoron
a deliberate combination of two words that seem to mean the opposite of each other, such as ‘cruel kindness’
Plot
the events that form the main story of a book, film, or play
Character
a person in a book, play, film etc
Suspense
a feeling of excitement or anxiety when you do not know what will happen next
