Matter
The physical stuff that makes up the universe. Anything that occupies space and has mass
Atom
The building block of matter; is the smallest possible particle of an elements
Element
A pure substance made of only 1 kind of atom
Energy
The ability to do work. Especially in biology, the river of physical and chemical process necessary for life
Temperature
A measurement of the average speed of the particles within a substance
Entropy
The tendency of energy to disperse and become less available to do work
Physical Change
A change in a substance that does not change the identity of the substance
Chemical Change
A change in a Substance that results in 1 or more new substances being formed that have different physical and chemical properties than those of the original substance
Bond
An attraction between 2 atoms as result of sharing or transferring valence electrons
Compound
A pure substance made from 2 or more elements that are chemically combined
Molecule
The smallest particle of a convalntly bonded compound
Acid
A substance that can produce hydrogen ions(H+)in solution
Dissolving
The process by which 1 substance, the solute, is broken up into smaller pieces by and distributed within a second substance, the solvent
Base
A substance that can produce hydroxide ions (OH-) or accept hydrogen ions (H+) in solution
Diffusion
The process by which particles in solution are evenly distributed throughout the solvent by Brownian motion
