What is archaic?
Belonging to an earlier time. Words or expressions that have passed out of usage or become obsolete.
What is aside?
A comment made by an actor which is not meant to be heard by anyone else on stage (commonly used in Skakespearean plays).
What is assonance?
Repetition of similar or identical vowel sounds. (ex. it cleans as it sweeps).
What is a balanced sentence?
A sentence in which phrases balance each other by virtue of their likeness or structure, their direct contrast of similarity in meaning, and their approximate equality in length. (ex. I love swimming; I hate skating).
What is a blank verse?
Poetry which has rhythem but no rhyme. Shakespeare writes most of his play lines in blank verse. The rhythm is usually iambic pentameter.
What is caesura?
A pause in a line of poetry.
What is caricature?
Distorted representation to produce rediculous effect.
What is character foil?
Any character who, by his contrast to another, brings out the personality of the latter.
What is chronology?
Measuring time and dating events.
What is chronological?
Arrangement of events in order of their appearance. (ex. siblings).
What is cliche’?
A phrase so common that the novalty has worn off. (ex. they all lived happily ever after, clear as day)
What is colloquial?
Informal expression appropriate to everyday speech rather than formal writing. (ex. lol, wassup, bro).
What is concrete?
Not theoretical or abstract.
What is connotation?
Implied meaning.
What is connsonance?
The repetition of consonant sounds within a series of words to produce a harmonious effect. (ex. struts and frets; first and last).
