When the audience knows somethinf characters do not
The audience knows Juliet isn’t dead when Romeo finds her in the tomb but Romeo doesnt
Situational Irony
When the unexpected happens
The fire station burned down; The cardiologist died of a heart attack
Verbal Irony
Speaking in a manner opposite of ones feelings
Yeah, homework! We love homework!
Sarcasm
Speech that is intended to “tear flesh”, insult
“I never forgot a face, but in your case I’ll be glad to make an exception”
Satire
A style of writing that targets human vices and follies or social institutions with the intent to create change or reform
/The Colbert Report/ satires news shows. /The Simpsons/ satires the American family
Parody
The imitative use of style in such a way as to ridicule
/Not Another Teen Movie/ parodies movies made for young audiences
Metonymy/Synecdote
A figure of speech in which a part stands for the whole
“…the banner of my purpose floats calmly and proudly in the breeze…”
Pathetic Fallacy
Giving human traits or feelings to inanimate nature
“…mid-September,mild,benignant,yet with a keener breath that of the summer months.”
Personification
Assigning human characteristics to nonhuman items
“…tortoises crawl about the earth,going nowhere in the plenty of time.”
Apostrophe
When a thing,abstract idea, or person is addressed as if present
“Busy old fool,unruly sun, why don’t thou thus, through windows and through curtains, call on us!”
Symbolism
Anything that represents something greater than itself
American flag=freedom;Weasels”=living ferociously
