Creation of the Church of England
Created by Henry VIII to divorce Catherine of Aragon, severed connections with the Pope in Rome.
Reasons for colonial expansion:
- Rapid growth of English population
- Economic recession, poor crop yield
- Law of primogeniture
- Development of joint-stock companies
1606 Virginia Company of London and Jamestown
Landed at the mouth of the Chesapeake, face terrible conditions, suffer malnutrition, disease, starvation. Lord De La Warr takes control, raids Indian villages and incites First Anglo-Powhatan War. John Rolfe begins to cultivate tobacco, becoming the cash crop and staple of the region. Goes bankrupt and is made into a royal colony.
House of Burgesses
Jamestown: Representation of the public in government, settlers chose delegates to advise governor
Second Anglo-Powhatan War
Indians lose to the Chesapeake settlers, peace treaty of 1646 banishes Indians from Virginia
Plymouth
Puritans seek to reform the Anglican Church of Roman practices. Follow John Calvin and the community of elect. One group, separatists, feel the church is corrupted by the entrance of the damned. Break off and travel to Holland, then to Plymouth.

1691: Merges with Massachussetts Bay Colony
Mayflower Compact and General Court
Establishes the first standard for written laws. Elects governors and councils of assistants.
