Symbolism
when Ladybird mother calls her Christine she gets pissed and yell that phrase back at her.
“Nah, I’m from the wrong side of the tracks
Shot/reverse shot
Over the shoulder
“No. I’m from the wrong side of the tracks” (Lady Bird 14:23-44). While Danny first interprets this line as “a metaphor,” he later realizes that “there are actual train tracks” separating his side of town from hers (Lady Bird 28:38-46). The train tracks symbolize the class divide between Danny and Lady Bird; his family resides in the wealthier neighbourhood.
“my mom is always mad. It doesn’t matter if I get home late, she’d be mad at me anyway.”
Montage
The diegetic sound of the unseen frame and the non-diegetic sound of the music.
(23:50-24:08) we see a montage play as non diegetic sound of music fades in and the diegetic talk of Danny starts. When Ladybird says “my mom is always mad. It doesn’t matter if I get home late, she’d be mad at me anyway.” we can see the separationg she feel towards her family and her life. Trying to distance herself as much as possible from her family isolating herself and alienating herself from her family however still knowing how important they are as she states
“Yeh, well, she loves me alot.”
Shot/ reverse shot
(24:05-10) as she states. “Yeh, well, she loves me alot.” highlighting her knowledge of how important family is and even through their struggles she still realises that they are family and that she needs them.
“Your gay!”
Lady bird was in the door before coming out of it and hugging Danny.
(44:37-45:55) During this scene Lady bird takes out the rubbish at her new job when Danny shows up. Lady bird isolates herself by placing herself in the doorway only looking out to talk to Danny who was outside the building. Danny apologises before telling Ladybird that he was gay and that he was scared of people knowing. By the end of the scene Ladybird was hugging Danny as he cried.
