What does multimedia mean?
Multimedia means that comp. info can be represented through audio, vid, and animation in addition to trad. media.
Where does the word multimedia come from?
Multimedia comes from two Latin roots, multi and media.
Multi means several
Media means in the middle
Five major components of multimedia
Text, graphics, sound, video, and animation
The most common multimedia element. It can have various types of fonts and sizes.

It makes the multimedia application attractive. It represents non-text info.
Graphics
Ex. JPEG
Two types of graphics
Bitmap images
and Vector graphics
Bitmap Images - real images that can be captured from devices.
Vector Graphics - Drawn on the computer and only require a small amount of memory.
A multimedia application may require the use of speech, music, and sound effects.
Audio
Ex. MP4
Refers to the moving picture, accompanied by a sound like a television picture.
Video
Ex. MP4, MOV, AVI files
The process of making a static image look like it is moving.
Animation
Advantages of using multimedia
User-friendly
Multisensorial
Integrated and Interactive
Flexible
Used for a wide variety of audience
