Simile
A non-literal comparison of two things whereby one thing is said to be alike to another.
repetition
The intentional reuse of a word or phrase within a body of work for a particular effect.
Rhyme
The repetition of similar-sounding syllables, often at the end of a line, used to produce an ‘echo’ effect.
Stanza
A collection of lines within a poem demarcated by a blank line or indentation.
Connotation
The implicit emotion and meaning attached to a word or phrase.
Persona
A voice or character assumed by the poet, through which the poem is told or conveyed.
Narrative perspective
The point of view from which a text is conveyed.
Metaphor

The application of human characteristics or qualities to something non-human, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.
Alliteration
The repetition of initial consonant sounds in a series of words.
Onomatopoeia
A figure of speech in which the sound of a word imitates its sense.
Parallel structure
The successive repetition of a sentence form or grammatical form in close proximity.
