Inflection
Words that change forms. She to her. He if it refers to male, and she if it refers to a female.
Case
The different functions a word plays in a sentence. Subjective, Objective, Possessive.
Subjective Case
If a word is the subject of the sentence, it is in the subjective case. The subject is what does the action of the active verb.
(‘He’ borrowed my computer.)
Possessive Case
If a word shows possession. (His)
He borrowed ‘my’ computer.
Objective Case
The direct object.
He borrowed my ‘computer’
Direct Object
The person or thing that is directly affected by the action of the active verb.
(He borrowed my ‘computer’)
Singular or Plural
If the word refers to only one of something the word is singular. (Teacher)
If word refers to more than one of something the word is plural. (Teachers)
Gender
Masculine = He Feminine = Her Neuter = It
Declension
Ways and patterns of making a word plural.
“S”
“es”
“goose” to “geese”
Noun
A word that stands for someone or something.
Adjective
A word that modifies a noun or another adjective.
big, blue, strange, dark
Preposition
A word that shows the relationship between two items.
(above, across, after, at, around, before, behind, below, beside, between, by, down, during, for, from, in, inside, onto, of, off, on, out, through, to, under, up, with)
Object of Preposition
The word or phrase following the preposition.
The student always studies after “the ball game”
Prepositional Phrase
The preposition, it’s object, and any modifiers.
The bracelet “in the storefront window” is the one I want.
Subject and Predicate
A sentence is broken down into two parts. The “subject” which refers to the subject of the verb and its modifiers. The “predicate” describes the rest of the sentence, including the verb, direct object, etc.
