Q

Who is Thomas Malthus? How can it links to Scrooge’s thoughts at the beginning of the novella?

A
  • Economist Thomas Malthus believed that the population would always grow faster than food supplies and that poverty was the inevitable result of overpopulation
  • “If they would rather die they had better do it and decrease the surplus population”
  • This demonstrates that he has no sympathy for the poor.
  • Scrooge sees the poor as simply a burden on society, who are responsible for their own condition and furthermore not deserving of charity.

Q

What does ‘as solitary as an oyster’ show about Scrooge?

A
  • Scrooge, like an oyster, has a tough, hard exterior and is closed to others. The simile is effective because it emphasises how he has chosen to isolate himself.
  • It also suggests that there may be more to be discovered where Scrooge is concerned.
  • Just as, when forced open, an oyster may contain a pearl, so Dickens suggests there may be something worthwhile to be found within Scrooge.
