hyperbole
An outrageous or extravagant exaggeration
Metaphor
A direct comparison of two unlike things
Personification
Giving human characteristics to an object, animal, place, or idea
Simile
A comparison of two unlike things using like or as
Alliteration
The repetition of the same or similar beginning sounds in words close together
Assonance
The repetition of the same or similar vowel beginning sounds in words that are close together.
Consonance
the close repetition of the same consonants or simlars consonant sounds (not at the beginning)
rhyme
the repetition of similar sounds at that come at the end of a word.
Rhythm
The musical quality created by a pattern of beats or series of stressed and unstressed syllables.
imagery
Descriptive writing that appeals to the five senses
Mood
The atmosphere created through words and descriptions
Tone
The writer’s attitude towards his or her subject
Theme
the message or lesson the author wants to tell the reader; Not the main idea
Foreshadowing
hints or clues the author gives about what will happen next in the story
Allusion
A reference in a story to a person, place or thing in history, mythology, pop culture etc.
