assonance
The repetition of the same vowel sound in a phrase or sentence.
imagery
The use of very descriptive language to paint a picture in the reader’s mind.
Stanza
The paragraphs of poetry.
connotation
The ideas, feelings or concepts associated with specific words, phrases.
tone
The way the author expresses their attitude through their writing. Not what
they are saying, but how they are saying it.
oxymoron
A phrase made of two or more words that actually have opposite meanings. For
example: alone together, deafening silence, seriously funny, etc.
enjambment
When a phrase or sentence in a line of poetry continues into the next line even though the sentence isn’t finished.
anaphora
The repetition of a word or words at the beginning of successive phrases or
lines.
Adynaton
A form of hyperbole which involves magnification of
an event by reference to the impossible or unattainable.
Homonym
A word written in the same way as another, but with
a different origin and meaning.
