Short dialogue spoken by a character directly to the
audience, which are not “heard” by the other characters
on stage.
characterisation
The creation of a character, revealed through their speech,
dress, manner, and actions.
dialogue
The conversation of characters in a text.
flashback
A moment of ‘looking back’ into the past.
stage directions
Instructions to actors and designers that tell us what
should be happening on a stage.
symbolism
The use of symbols (colour’s, objects, images, shapes, etc)
to represent ideas or qualities.
diction
The choice and use of words and phrases in a text.
dramatic irony
When the audience knows something that the characters
on stage don’t.
microcosm
A small representation of a society/group of people.
foreshadowing
Hints of what is to come in the action of a play or a story.
juxtaposition
Two things placed side-by-side to highlight their
differences.
monologue
A long speech made by a single character without another
character’s response. Think ‘one-man’ show, or your
teacher when you aren’t engaging and they just keep
talking at you.
soliloquy
Internal dialogue spoken aloud.
