What is Irony?
when what was is expressed seems like the opposite of the true meaning.
Situational Irony
When the outcome is the opposite of what was expected
Verbal Irony
When was is said is the opposite of the actual meaning
Dramatic Irony
When the audience knows something the characters don’t
Symbolism
When an object or word has a deeper meaning than what is may seem like. Often represents something.
Paradox
A situation with 2 opposite ideas. For example, “The beginning of the end.”
Oxymoron
A phrase with 2 opposite words. For example, “Awfully good” or “Defining Silence”
Pun
A humorous use of words. A pun if often a joke. For example, “The bicycle cant stand on it’s own because it’s two-tired”
Alliteration
The same letter or sound at the beginning of words that are put together. For example, “Green Grass Grew” OR “Fancy Flowers”
Conflict
The problem in the story. For example, Self vs person
Theme
The main topic or idea. For example, Kindness
Mood
The feeling that the reader get
tone
The attitude of the author given through the writing.
Imagery
While reading you may recall images or mentally picture.
1st person
when the writer is talking about themself. Pronouns like-me-my-mine-ours-we
3rd person
when the writer is talking about someone else. Pronouns like- them, they, he, his, she, her
foreboding
A feeling that something bad will happen. For example, the gloomy sky
foreshadowing
When the writer gives a hint that something bad is going to happen later in the story.
monolog
A speech given by one person or a one sided conversation.
Soliloquy
Speaking ones thoughts aloud by oneself. AKA talking to yourself out loud.
Aside
Break from the dialog and talking to the audience about whats happening and sharing the inner thoughts and feelings of the characters.
