Who was the first permanent English Settlement/Colony?
In 1607 Jamestown was the first permanent English Colony/Settlement.
What is the significance of the three ships The God Speed, The Discovery, and Susan Constant?
- Three ships that brought America’s first permanent English colonists to Virginia in 1607 are moored at Jamestown.
- The Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery set sail from London on December 20, 1606, bound for Virginia. The ships carried 104 passengers and 30 crew members.
Who or what was the Joint Stock Company?
The Virginia Company of London was a joint stock company that financed this expedition to Virginia. This was a moneymaking venture. The hope was to set up a permanent colony to look for gold and other natural resources to send back to England.
Who was Christopher Newport?
Susan Constant, a cargo vessel of 120 tons captained by Christopher Newport (who was also the admiral of the fleet): arrived at Cape Henry on April 26, 1607.

When did Christopher Newport return to Englands?
- Christopher Newport left Jamestown to return to England in July 1607 with timber wood, this made the Joint Stock Company look bad due them being in search for gold.
- In January 1608 Christopher Newport returned to Jamestown in January 1608 only to find a few people (30-40) alive/survived thanks to John Smith.
What was the “Head Right System”?
In 1617 the “Head Right System” was created to pay/sponsor a person to leave England and come to the New World (Jamestown Colony/Virginia) to work. In return the Sponsor would receive 50 acres of land of the New World.
The person being sponsored/ Indentured Servant would work for a limited amount of years to be freed from their contract and would receive a certain amount of acres afterwards.
What was the “Corn Law”?
The “Corn Law” was created in 1618 by the settlers of Jamestown/Jamestown Colony. The law made landowners grow at least two acres of corn to prevent the “Starvation Times” from happening again.
When was the “House of Burgesses” created?
In 1619 the “House of Burgesses” was created. It was the first elected representative body in the western hemisphere.
When did Jamestown/Jamestown Colony/Roanoke Colony become a Royal Colony?
In 1624 the Jamestown Colony became a Royal Colony when the Joint Stock Company shut down and England (James the 1st) took over.
