- China had a powerful Navy.
- Cheng Ho travels the world.
- 1430’s China becomes isolated/ antisocial due to internal issues with the north (Mongolians), which made a Navy not important at the time.

What were some of the motives for the expansion of Europe?
- Economic Motives- fluctuations in prices, trade, etc…
- Religious Motives- Crusades (Christians VS Muslims)
- National Security (Primative Arms Race)- power struggles, weapons invention/improvement
What were some of the conditions that lead to Europe’s expansion?
- Knowledge- Christopher Columbus knew the world was round while others thought differently.
- Technology- A Portuguese ship called the Caravel was used the sail through water and was better with use of the compass
- National Unity- (Spain) A Portuguese Prince (Henry The Navigator) was the leader in funding exploration of the world.

He sailed around The Cape of Good Hope to show that there was a way through the continent (Prince Henry was dead by the time of the discovery).

In 1488 he gets in/participates in traveling and voyages.
Why did Portugal create a Navy?
…to control the straits for taxing.

In 1492 Grenada fell and it was the last strong hold for the Moors. (Christians VS Muslims)
