It diverted France and the Habsburgs focus on the italian peninsula, so that he could not threaten the 2 bases

- The European peninsula was left with young politically driven leaders e.g. Francis I immediately invades northern Italy
- Charles, Ferdinand and Roman Emperors grandson, had control of Spain, Netherlands and Holy Roman Empire

It placed him at the centre of european diplomacy and gave him immediate fame, Upstaged the pope, and dispelled english isolation as each country signed the treaty seperately with England
Why didn’t the treaty of London secure peace for long?
After Charles was elected Holy Roman Emperor in 1519, he wanted to assume control over Milan after France had won it. This made conflict between both countries inevitable
How did Henry VIII support the habsburgs in the years 1520-1525?
- He wanted to make substantial territories in France so he sided with Charles V
- Miltary action captures Francis I after battle of Pavia in Italy
- Henry called on Charles to help him end French
independence by dividing country into Spanish and English zone - Charles doesnt agree as he doesnt want to pursue English interests and money is wasted

- Wolsey opens negotiations between France, Pope, and florence for an anti-Habsburg alliance (League of Cognac 1526)
- England and France conclude alliance in 1527, and go to war against Charles in 1528
