What was a problem Elizabeth faced when queen in relation to: Marriage?
Unmarried- unusual for a queen to rule in her own right(As Christian tradition suggesting men should be in authority)
-many disapproved of a queen regnant (queen who actually ruled)

In order to pass laws- she needed the support of parliament

Elizabeth was young (21 years old) and lacked experience

Elizabeth’s government needed money (as the crown was already in £300 000 debt)

People doubted her legitimacy-
as the pope had refused to recognise her mothers marriage to Henry VIII

Catholics refused to acknowledge Elizabeth’s right to rule England

Elizabeth was Protestant .Her predecessor Mary was catholic.

Why would marriage be an issue for Elizabeth?
It would reduce her power -husband would be expected to govern + deal with parliament.
Why would inexperience be an issue for Elizabeth?
She needed support/ advice of her privy council, especially her Secretary of State: Sir William Cecil.
What would the reaction to marriage be from Catholics and Protestants?
Catholics- Angry if married to Protestant.
Protestants- Angry if married to catholic
(Yet) If Elizabeth went unmarried, why would this be an issue?
She needs an heir- or risk her throne being vacant upon her death and lead to civil war.
