Engineering principles Flashcards
What is the definition of density?
Mass per unit volume
What are the units for density?
Kg/m^3
What is the definition of relative density?
Ratio of that substance compared to the density of pure water
What are the units of relative density?
No units
What is the definition of friction?
A force that opposes the relative motion of two surfaces in contact with each other
What are the units of friction?
Newtons (N)
What is the definition of the coefficient of friction?
A measure of the amount of friction existing between two surfaces
What are the factors which affect friction? (3)
- The nature of the materials in contact
- The forces pressing the surfaces together, e.g weight
- The presence or absence of any form of lubricant
What are the two types of friction?
Static Friction
Kinetic Friction
Briefly describe static friction?
Friction between surface of stationary bodies in contact with each other.
Must be overcome to move either body.
Briefly describe kinetic friction?
Friction between surfaces moving relative to each other.
Sliding friction –> Solid surfaces
Viscous friction –> Solid and Liquid or gas
How can friction be reduced?
By selecting materials with a low coefficient of friction or by using lubricants or bearings
What is the definition of Viscosity?
A measure of resistance of layers of fluid sliding over each other
What are the effects of viscosity being lower than the manufacturers rated value?
Power loss will be reduced
Wear rate will increase
What are the effects of viscosity being higher than the manufacturers rated value?
Power loss will be increased
Wear rate will be reduced
