Engineering Physics Flashcards
Inertia
? The resistance of any physical object to any change in its velocity
Moment of Inertia
? The ability of an object to resist change in velocity/motion in rotating objects
Angular Analogies
? A way of comparing one thing to another for an explanation
Flywheels
? Round object with mass that rotates, with a large moment of inertia
The first law of thermodynamics
? Just a quantitative representation of the equation. Q = ΔU + W
What does the equation Q = ΔU + W represent?
Q - Heat energy transfer TO the system
W - Work done BY the system
ΔU - Change in internal energy
Internal energy
? sum of the random distribution of kinetic and potential energies of all particles
Open and Closed Systems
? A region in space that contains a quantity of gas vapour
Open system
? The gas or vapour flows into/out of the region. The gas may pass across the boundary between the system and its surroundings.
Examples of an open system
Sealed water bottle, balloon, cylinder with a piston
Closed system
? Where the gas or vapour within the region although the boundary separating the closed system from its surroundings may not be fixed.
Examples of a closed system
Steam passing through a turbine, open cup of coffee.
Non-flow process
? No gas is flowing in or out of the system (closed system)
Isothermal process
? No temperature change, temperature remains constant. ΔU =0
Adiabatic process
? No heat is transferred in or out of the system, Q=0. PV^𝛾 = constant
