ENGINE INDICATION Flashcards

1
Q

What 3 groups are engine indications divided into?

A

Performance (monitor limits, set thrust)

System (e.g oil and fuel systems, detect malfunctions quickly)

8
Q

What 3 different types of ananlyses are done for engine trend monitoring?

A
  • Thermodynamic (measures pressures and temps of gas flow path)
  • Mechanic-dynamic (checks vibration and rotor speed signals)
  • Oil consumption (alert when oil consumption exceeds certain limit)

16
Q

Low oil pressure warnings are always accompanied by what type of warning?

A

An acoustic warning.

17
Q

Where can the oil temperature sensor be located?

A

Scavenge System - senses hot oil upstream of oil cooler

Pressure system - senses temp of cooled oil

18
Q

What is the spectrometric oil analysis program? SOAP

A

Find internal wear of lubricated engine components

Find parts that filter can pick up ranging from sizes 0.01 - 0.02mm

19
Q

Where are SOAP oil samples taken from?

A

Oil tank on a regular basis

20
Q

What size particles are the filter elements in an oil system able to pick up?

A

Sizes above 0.015mm

21
Q

What is the issue with filters in oils systems?

A

It is not changed often and inspections take time.

22
Q

How can magnetic chip detectors be inspected?

A

Manually by removing

Automatically on modern aircraft and removed when necessary.

23
Q

How does the magnetic chip detector work?

A

Resistance will decrease when particles connect with the detector. Once below a value the ECU sends maintenance message.

24
Q

What units usually show the level of vibration?

A

0-6

25
Q

What is EVMU?

A

Engine vibration monitoring unit.

26
Q

What are engine vibration sensors made up of?

A

Accelerometers that measure the radial acceleration of the rotor system.

27
Q

What is the BB vibration sensor?

A

Broad band, unfiltered vibration signal from aft sensor.

Used when rotor signals not available

28
Q

What happens when a vibration level reaches a critical value?

A

Vibration indication starts pulsing.

29
Q

What does the fuel flow transmitter measure?

A

Flow of fuel between fuel control unit and the fuel nozzles.

Based on; force = mass x acceleration

30
Q

What position transducers in fuel flow transmitters measure the turbine angle?

A

Synchro or RVDT.

31
Q

Why do modern fuel flow transmitters not need an electric motor with a power supply?

A

Use the fuel itself to generate acceleration.
