Invention
A

I am online every waking hour of every day. The internet was invented in the 1960s, but it has been in private use for only about 30 years. Nowadays the average teenager spends around four hours on his or her mobile phone and another four hours on a computer each day. I use the internet when I listen to music going to school, when I do research for papers at school, when I chat with a friend during breaks and when I watch Netflix at home. The internet is present everywhere and that is why the internet is the greatest invention of all time.

Q
A click away
54% in english
Library in my smartphone
Can google whenever
Information on freetime
Learn language
A

Firstly, thanks to the internet all the world’s information is only a click away.
This is especially true for us english speakers since 54% of the internet content is in english. I have an entire library on my smartphone and I use it in every subject at school. Because of the internet is it no longer necessary to learn a lot of facts by heart, since I can just google whatever I am unsure about. Other than being an incredible tool for school, I can use it to access information in my freetime. I can learn French by watching youtube videos, I can read a newspaper from across the world and on a blog I can learn how to bake cookies.

Q

Americanized, second language, films
Bollywood movies
Spanish music
Fashion in Japan

A

Secondly the internet gives us access to other cultures. The argument is often that culture is becoming more and more americanized. For example everyone learns english as a second language and our books and especially movies primarily american. Despite this I found that I also for exemple can watch Bollywood movies, listen to spanish music or read a Facebook post about fashion in Japan. Thanks to the internet I can do more than just follow mainstream, often americaine culture.

Which information is accurate
A

Conversely the internet has created new problems. We easily get addicted to mindlessly browsing the internet. We expose our private lives on social media and we now have internet bullying and hackers stealing our credit card information. Everyday we are subject to an endless flow of information that it is impossible to decide which information is accurate.

So, do the positive effects of the internet really outweighs the negative ones? paus

Yes, because the greatest advantages the internet provides us is a well functioning society. The internet is at the heart of how our modern societies are structured. A lot of jobs in our society was created because of the internet. One job in the technology industry creates five more jobs surrounding the company. The last ten years Skype has brought 300 million people together, according to Gabriela González in the article “A million reasons why the internet is good for you” september 4th 2014.
