Engaging children and parents Flashcards
What is an extrinsic motivation?
It means you have an external locus of control.
What is the self-determination theory?
It’s about both outcome and process.
Connects person, occupation and environment.
A - autonomy “I have choices”
R - Relatedness “I am connected to others”
C - Competence “I can do things”
What is intrinsic motivation?
It means you have an internal locus of control.
What are the 6 stages of the self-determination taxonomy?
Stage 1 - Amotivation - arises from not valuing activity, not feeling competent, not believing outcome will be achieved.
Three Ps - personalised, pervasive, permanent
Stage 2 - External regulation - Contingent on rewards (tangible and non-tangible).
Stage 3 - Introjection - Striving because you ought to do it for self-approval, others approval, to avoid disapproval. (coulda, shoulda)
Stage 4 - Identified regulation - Identifying and setting goals.
Stage 5 - Integrated regulation - Goals you are trying to achieve are for extrinsic reasons but with intrinsic motivation.
Stage 6 - Intrinsic motivation -
How does self-determination theory apply in therapy?
Autonomy - I have choices
Parents and children need to determine and establish understanding about why they come to therapy and what to expect.
Collaborative goal setting: acknowledges choice in therapeutic encounter.
