Energy Unit Vocabulary Part 2 Flashcards
Alternating Current
An electrical current that reverses its direction many times a second at regular intervals
Direct Current
An electrical current that flows consistently in one directions
Amplitude
The distance between the wave’s resting position and its maximum displacement
Frequency
The number of waves that pass by a specific point per second
Crest
The highest point on a wave
Trough
The lowest point on a wave
Medium
A material that moves energy or light from one substance to another
Transverse Wave
The transfer of energy in a motion that is perpendicular to the direction the wave is traveling
Wave
A disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another in a regular and organized way
Wavelength
The total distance covered to complete one wave
Doppler Effect
The changes in frequency of any kind of sound, light, or other waves as the source and observer move towards/away from each other
Electromagnetic Wave
Waves that are created as a result of vibrations between an electric field and a magnetic field
Gamma Rays
Form of electromagnetic radiation; shortest wavelength and highest energy
Infrared Waves
Type of radiant energy that is invisible to the eyes
Microwaves
Electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths shorter than radio waves but longer than infrared waves
