Energy Unit Vocabulary Part 1 Flashcards
Mechanical Energy
The sum of potential and kinetic energy that an object uses to do work.
Potential Energy
Stored energy due to position
Kinetic Energy
Energy that a moving object possesses
Thermal Energy
The total energy of motion in the particles of a substance
Chemical Energy
The energy required to bond atoms together or break atoms apart
Electrical Energy
Energy of moving electrons
Conduction
The process by which heat energy is transmitted through collisions between neighboring atoms or molecules
Convections
Transfer of thermal energy in a fluid by the movement of warmer and cooler fluid from one place to another
Insulator
Materials that do not allow electricity to pass through them
Radiation
Energy that comes from a source and travels through space at the speed of light
Specific Heat Capacity
Quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of a substance by one degree celsius
Temperature
A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object
Circuit
A closed loop that electric current will flow
Electric Current
The rate of flow of electrons in a conductor
Ohm’s Law
The electric current is proportional to voltage and inversely proportional to resistance
