Energy Transfers and Stores Flashcards
What is an Energy Store?
An energy store is a place where an object keeps the energy that has been transferred to itself.
Name the 8 Types of energy stores and their functions
- Kinetic
- Chemical
- Gravitational potential
- Elastic potential
- Thermal
- Electrostatic
- Magnetic
- Nuclear
Kinetic energy store function
Anything to do with movement/motion
Chemical energy store function
Energy released in a chemical reaction.
Thermal store function
Heat; can be released, transferred, or dissipated (wasted)
Gravitational potential function
Any object (system) that has a mass and is in a gravitational field.
Elastic potential function
Objects that have been stretched and compressed
Electrostatic store function
When two opposite charges attract with electrostatic forces of attraction.
Magnetic store function
When two opposite poles attract or repel each other
Nuclear stores function
When atomic nuclei have energy that can be released in nuclear reactions
What is a system?
A system is an object or group of objects.
What is a closed system?
A closed system is an object where matter nor energy can enter or leave and its net change is always zero
When a system (object) changes…
Energy is transferred
Name the 4 ways Energy can be transferred (Energy Pathways)
- Mechanically
- Electrically
- By Heating
- By Radiation
What is work done?
Another way for saying energy transferred
