Energy Transfers Flashcards
Define net primary productivity
The rate at which energy from the sun is converted into organic molecules making up new biomass
Define gross primary productivity
The energy transferred to primary consumers
Why may energy be lost at each tropic level?
- Undigested matter (e.g bones/wood)
- Respiration (exothermic, transfers thermal energy to surroundings)
- Metabolic waste products (urine/faeces)
Define trophic level
Position or stage that something occupies in a food chain
Define biomass
The mass of living materials in a particular place or organisms
Describe two techniques for measuring biomass
- By measuring the mass of fresh material present (easy but unreliable as water mass varies)
- Or measuring the dry mass (most accurate but organisms must be killed and heated at high temps to remove water)
How is net primary production calculated?
net production = gross productivity — respiratory losses
How can efficiency of biomass calculated?
(biomass transferred / biomass intake) x 100
How is efficiency of an energy transfer calculated?
