Energy transfer by heating Flashcards
3 types of heat energy transfer
Conduction, convection, and radiation
What is thermal radiation?
The transfer of energy by heating using infrared electromagnetic waves
What are conduction and convection?
Energy transfers that involve the movement of energy by particles
Explain thermal radiation
1) All objects are continually emitting and absorbing infrared radiation.
2) An object that’s hotter than its surroundings emits more radiation than it absorbs (as it cools down).
3) This radiation can be felt if you stand near something hot like a fire.
4) Some colours and surfaces absorb and emit radiation better than others.
Conduction
The process where vibrating particles transfer energy from their kinetic energy store to the stores of adjacent particles.
Convection
Heat transfer through movement of fluids and gases by formation of convection currents.
What do hot fluids do and why?
They rise because the particles are less dense than the particles in a cold fluid.
What do cold fluids do and why?
They fill the space created when the hot fluids rise.
Radiation
Heat energy transfers through electromagnetic waves (can happen in a vacuum)
