Energy Transfer Flashcards
What is an exothermique reaction?
A reaction that gives out energy to the surrounding
Usually in the form of heat
How can an exothermique reaction be shown?
By a rise of temperature
Give me 2 examples of an exothermic reaction
Combustion
Burning fossil fuel
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction where energy is taken in
Usually in the form of heat
How can an endothermic reaction be shown?
By a decrease in Temperature
Give me an example of an endothermic reaction?
Thermal decomposition
How can you tell if there is an endothermic or exothermic reaction going on in an experiment ?
By the temperature change
Experiment-
Mixing the reactants in a POLYSTYRENE CUP
Putting cotton around the cup
Place a thermometer inside the cup
Add a lid to the cup
Measure the temperature at the start
Then measure the temperature of the reaction at the end
If temperature decreases - endo
If temperature increases - exo
What happens when an acid mixes with an alkali?
It is an exothermic reaction
Temperature will increase
What happens when you dissolve ammonium nitrate in water?
It is an endothermic reaction
Temperature will decrease
What happens to the particles in an exothermic reaction?
Particles will bond
(Attach to each other)
This will release a lot of energy
What happens to the particles in an endothermic reaction?
Particles that are in a bond will break
(Becomes 2 individual particles)
This demands energy when breaking
(Energy being supplied to break the bond)
