Energy Systems Flashcards
What are the three energy systems?
ATP-PC
Lactic acid
Aerobic
What are the two different types of muscles?
Voluntary- you cannot control them. eg. Cardiac muscle
Involuntary- you can control them. eg. Quads
What is interplay?
All of the three systems working together but at different intensity’s
Slow twitch
Last for longer periods of time. eg. Long distance runner, marathon runner
Fast twitch
Foe explosive sports. eg. Sprinting, field events. But can’t sustain endurance as long in muscles. They are quickly fatigued.
What are the two types of muscle fibres?
Slow twitch- dark in colour
Fast twitch- light in colour
Everyone is born with one of the types of muscle fibres
ATP-CP
Component of fitness, time of effectiveness, intensity, activities/sports, muscle fibre type, fitness tests, speed of muscle contraction, and fatigue
Component if fitness: muscular strength, power, reaction time, speed
Time of effectiveness: first 10 seconds
Intensity: maximal, greater than 95%
Activities/sports: 100m sprint, shot put, weight lifting, high/long jump
Muscle fibre type: fast twitch (white)
Fitness tests: vertical jump, bicep curl
Speed of muscle contraction: very rapid
Fatigue: fast
Lactic acid
Component of fitness, time of effectiveness, intensity, activities or sports, muscle fibre type, fitness tests, speed of muscle contraction, and fatigue
Component of fitness: muscular endurance Time of effectiveness: 10-30 seconds Intensity: near maximal (85-95%) Activities/sport: 200-400m sprint Muscle fibre type: fast twitch (white), but some red fibres Fitness tests: push ups, sit ups Speed of muscle contraction: rapid Fatigue: fast
Aerobic
Component of fitness, time of effectiveness, intensity, activities or sports, muscle fibre type, fitness tests, speed of muscle contraction, and fatigue
Component of fitness: cardio respiratory endurance Time of effectiveness: 30+ seconds Intensity: sub maximal (less than 85%) Activities/sport: long duration activities, marathon runner, footballer Muscle fibre type: slow twitch (red) Fitness tests: 12 min run, beep test Speed of muscle contraction: slow Fatigue: slow
What fuels are used in the energy system?
Carbohydrates, fats and proteins (last resort)
What is the role of ATP?
To provide energy to the muscles
Explain lactic acid
Used when little amount of oxygen is needed in the body. It if for height intensity sports
What are by-products of each energy system?
ATP-nil
Lactic acid- sore legs
Aerobic-water
What is the predominant fuel at low intensity?
Carbohydrates
How many systems can work at once?
All of the three systems can work at once
