Energy stores and energy transfer Flashcards
Energy
what is Kinetic energy?
the energy of motion
what is Thermal energy?
the temperature of an object determined by the amount of energy stored in its thermal store
what is Chemical energy?
energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds, like atoms and molecules
what is Gravitational potential energy?
any object raised above ground level has energy in this store
what is Elastic potential energy?
anything stretched has energy in this store
what is Electrostatic energy?
two charges that attract or repel each other has energy in this store
what is Magnetic energy?
two magnets that attract or repel each other has energy in this store
what is Nuclear energy?
the nucleus of an atom releases energy from this store in nuclear reactions
how is energy transferred Mechanically and Electrically?
mechanically:
this happens when a force does work (a force pushing an object along the floor)
electrically:
this happens when a moving charge does work (when a current flows through a light bulb)
how is energy transferred by heating and by radiation?
by heating:
when energy is transferred from a hotter object to a colder object (when a pan of water is heated on a hob)
by radiation:
this happens when energy is transferred by sound or light (when energy from the Sun travels to Earth by light)
what is a system and what happens?
single object or a group that you’re interested in, the way energy is stored changes
what is a closed system and what happens?
systems where no matter or energy can enter or leave, there is no overall change in the total energy of the system
whats a thermal energy store?
as a material is heated, energy is transferred here, this causes an increase in temperature
