Efficiency and Energy Resources and their uses Flashcards
Energy
what are the two Efficiency formulas?
Efficiency = Useful output energy transfer ÷ total input energy transfer
Efficiency = Useful power output ÷ total power input
what are Non-renewable Energy Resources?
- energy collected from resources that cannot be replaced when they are used up
- fossil fuels and nuclear fuel
what are the three main fossil fuels?
coal, oil and natural gas
what are Renewable Energy Resources?
energy that comes from a source that won’t run out
what are the RER you need to know?
- The Sun
- Wind
- Water waves
- Hydro-electricity
- Biofuels
- Tides
- Geothermal
how is transport used for energy resources?
vehicles can run on pure biofuels or a mix of a biofuel and petrol or diesel
how is transport used for non-renewable energy resources?
petrol or diesel is used in most vehicles, created from oil
coal is used in steam trains to boil water to produce steam
how is heat used for renewable energy resources?
- biofuel boilers work in the same way as gas boilers
- geothermal heat pump uses geothermal energy resources
- solar water heaters use the Sun to heat water which is then pumped into radiators
how is heat used for non- renewable energy resources?
- natural gas is burnt to heat water in a boiler, this hot water is then pumped into radiators
- gas fires burn natural gas to heat rooms
- coal is burnt in open fireplaces
