Energy Statistics UK Flashcards
How much power is there on average in UK renewables?
Potential energy of rainfall Scottish highland: 0.24 w/m2
Energy crops in Europe: 0.5 w/m2
On & offshore wind farms England, Wales: 2.5 w/m2
Wind farm Scottish hilltop: 3.5 w/m2
Solar PV Northern Europe: 4-5 w/m2
Solar pV sunnier locations few more than 10 w/m2
CSP 20 w/m2
Suggestion of wind farm, vertical axis: 18 w/m2
How much energy do a person I Britain consume second?
Britain consumes energy at about 5000W per person
Load factor for solar farms. What does it mean, how can it be estimated? What are values in UK and what is good?
MacKay (2013): load factor is an important financial attribute.
The ratio of tis average electrical output to tis capacity….there is a strong correlation between insolation and load factor. Load factor equals about insolation dividend by 1000W/m2.
For sunny locations load factor about 20 %, in UK 10-12%
Electricity consumption in UK could be covered using 1% of land if assuming power per unit area is 15 W/m2 (credible for roof-top mounted but not commercial systems, 20 % for single panels, 5% for larger installations) - would rather need 3 % land according to MacKay (2013). Also storage loss would increase this by 33%,,, How much land area is occupied by buildings resp roads?
1.2% buildings, 1.5% roads.
Solar thermal UK, power per unit area?
50 W/m2…I.e 3m2 can produce half of the hot water needed in an average European household.
How many TWh is 1Mtoe?
11.630 TWh (i.e about 10 TWh)
