Energy Sources and Power Stations Flashcards
How does a nuclear power station work?
Nuclear fission of uranium or plutonium produces heat. This turns water to steam and this turns a turbine, which turns a generator.
Advantages and disadvantages of using wind power?
Pros: Doesn’t cause pollution. No fuel costs. Minimal running costs. No permanent damage to landscape.
Cons: Noisy. Wind is variable. High initial costs.
What are the advantages and disadvantages associated with hydroelectric power?
Pros: Produces an immediate response to an increased demand for electricity. Reliable source of energy. No fuel or running costs. Good at providing energy on a small scale in remote areas.
Cons: High initial costs. Flooding the valley leaves rotting vegetables and releases methane and CO2. Possible loss of habitat. Looks very ugly when dried up.
