EM Waves Flashcards
Which wave has the highest frequency?
Gamma rays
Which wave has the lowest frequency?
Radio waves
What are radio waves mostly used for?
Communication
What are microwaves used for and found in?
Satellites, GPS and mobile phones.
What are Infra-red waves used for?
Remote controls and in optical fibres.
What can short radio-waves do?
They can get reflected.
What can long radio waves do?
Bend around the Earth.
What can visible light do?
Can be used in photography and cameras.
What is the danger with infra red?
It can burn
What is the danger associated with gamma rays?
They can cause ionisation of cells and this could develop as cancer.
What is the danger associated with x-rays?
It can cause ionisation of cells, which could lead to cancer. Therefore a lead apron needs to be worn by radiographers.
What is the danger associated with ultra violet (UV)?
It can cause skin cancer.
What are the colours in the visible light spectrum?
Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet. (ROYGBIV)
What wavelengths does the EM spectrum go through?
10^-15 metres to 10^4 metres
In what condition do all EM waves travel at the same speed at/
They all travel at the same speed through a vacuum.
