energy sources and power stations Flashcards
1
Q
how many types of energy resources are there?
A
12
2
Q
how are the energy resources split?
A
into renewable and non-renewable
3
Q
what are the non-renewable resources?
A
coal
oil
natural gas
nuclear (uranium and plutonium)
4
Q
what are the renewable resources?
A
- wind
- waves
- solar
- geothermal
- food
- biofuels
- tides
- hydroelectric
5
Q
what does non renewable mean?
A
- they will run out one day
- they all do damage to the environment
- however they provide most of our energy
6
Q
what is renewable?
A
- they will never run out
- most of them cause damage to the environment but in a less ‘nasty’ way than non-renewable resources
- they don’t provide much energy and some are unreliable
7
Q
energy sources can be burned to drive turbines in power stations.describe the process
A
- fossil fuel burnt,to convert its stored chemical energy into heat
- the energy is used to heat water to produce steam
- the steam turns a turbine converting heat energy into kinetic energy
- turbine connected to a generator, transfers kinetic energy into electrical energy
8
Q
what happens at a nuclear power station?
A
-similar to power station, uses uranium and plutonium instead and instead of a generator it uses a boiler
9
Q
disadvantages of nuclear power stations
A
they produce radioactive waste that is hard to dispose of
it has a long start up time
