Energy Sorces Flashcards
What are some non renewable resources?
Coal
Oil
Natural gas
Nuclear fuels
What are some renewable resources?
Wind Solar Water Hydroelectric Biofuels
How are energy sources burned in a power station?
The fuel is chemical energy and enters the boiler creating heat energy. This then enters the turbine creating kinetic energy which enters a generator creating electrical energy
What does wind power consist of?
Wind turbines in coasts
The electricity created from the generator if from the wind
No pollution
Spoil view and noisy and no power when wind stops
Expensive and no permanent damage
What do solar cells consist of?
They generate electrical currents directly from sunlight Good doe calculators and watches No pollution In sunny country's very reliable Once purchased energy is free
What does hydroelectric power consist of?
Flooding of a valley to create a dam
No pollution
Big impact because of flood, damaged habitats
Can provide immediate response to demand of electricity
Drought it won’t work
What does pumped storage consist of?
It takes the spare night time electricity to a higher reservoir which then can be released quick when demand
What does wave power consist of?
Up and down movement of waves drives the generator
No pollution but spoils view and hazard to boats
When wind drops wave power is unreliable
What do tidal barrages consist of?
Big dams across rivers with turbines Tides moves the turbine and controls speed No pollution Source of energy is sun moon and gravity Boats cannot get through
What does geothermal energy consist of?
Only possible in volcanic areas
Steam and hot water rise to surface and drive the generator
Free energy with no environmental problems
Not many suitable locations
What do biofuels consist of?
RenewAble energy resources
Used in cars
Can be straw or nutshells
Processed the same way as fossil fuels
What can burning fossil fuels do?
Release co2
Acid rain
Oil spills environmental problems
Coal makes a mess
What is a disadvantage of biofuels?
Forests have to be cleared to make room to grow them
What is carbon capture and storage?
Collecting co2 from power stations before released into the atmosphere. It is then pumped into gas fields under the sea
What does a step down transformer do?
Makes sure the voltage is at safe levels for in the home
