Energy resources and there features Flashcards
/Is nuclear energy renewable?
How does it work
No
It releases the energy stored in the nucleus. The typical fuels used are plutonium and uranium
Is nuclear energy renewable?
How does it work
No
It releases the energy stored in the nucleus. The typical fuels used are plutonium and uranium
2 advantages of nuclear fuel
2 disadvatages of nuclear fuel
adv- produces loads of energy and reliable
disadv- radioactive waste and it takes up a lot of money to store it properly
How do biofuels work
they release chemical potential energy stored in living things by burning them
2adv for biofuels
2disadv
-doesn’t need any special equipment and doesn’t add to greenhouse effect.
disadv- large areas of land are needed to grow trees
What are wind turbines used for
to turn the kinetic energy from the wind into electrical energy
advantages of wind and disadvantages
adv- no pollution, nothing gets burned and turbines are cheap and easy to use
dis- they can be ugly/noisy and if the wind level is low you don’t get as much energy
how does hydroelectricity work
flowing water has kinetic energy. hydroelectric dams convert this energy into electricity
advantages and disadvantages for hydroelectricity
adv- no pollution
-can store the water up high
disadv- costs a lot of money to build a dam
-the dam can ruin the local environment
how does geothermal energy work
it can use the heat from the centre of the earth to boil water to make steam. This is used to create electricity or radioactive rocks
geothermal advantages and disadvantages
adv- no pollution
-no damage to the environment
disadv- very few places in the world where you can do this
-costs a lot to do this
how does tidal work
the tide works by when the water goes up it gains gravitational potential energy. This can be turned into electrical energy
tidal advantages and disadvantages
adv- no pollution
- cheap to run
disadv- costs a lot to build a dam
-the dam can cause local flooding
how does solar energy work
this uses the heat and light from the sun to create energy or water for homes
adv and disadv for solar
adv- no pollution
-free fuel
disadv- solar cells aren’t reliable (only works well if sunny)
-doesn’t work at night
