Energy Resources Flashcards
Explain what is meant by the term CCS (capture carbon storage)
Thsi is a way of stopping c02 getting into the atmosphere and polluting it, old plus and fuel can be used for storage,
Give to advantages of using nuclear power to supply energy rather than coal.
It doesn’t produce pollutant gases and more bevy is produced per kg of fuel
List 7 energy sources
Solar Wind Biomass Geothermal Hydroelectric Tidal Wave
Describe solar energy and what it does/ how it works
- it comes from the sun
- the heat and light turns into electrical energy by solar cells
- it’s free, no waste/pollution, renewable
- doesn’t work at night, expensive to buy, in less sunny places won’t work
Describe wind energy and what it does/ how it works
- energy comes from the wind
- the sun heats the atmosphere and leaves patches that are warmer, these rise and air blows to replace gaps, causing wind which turns a generator.
- wind is free, renewable, no waste: pollution
- isn’t always predictable, expensive, interfere tv connections, noisy, kill wildlife
Describe biomass energy and what it does/ how it works
- from organic materials being burnt.
- biomass plant burns materials (eg wood) creating energy.
- renewable, good use of waste materials, cheap.
- collecting/ growing fuel can be difficult in large quantities, not available all year round?
Describe geothermal energy and what it does/ how it works
- from within the earth, near heated places.
- power plants tap into hot reservoirs underground, renewable heat is used to drive an electrical generator.
- no pollution, doesn’t contribute to greenhouse gases, no fuel is needed and power stations are small.
- not many suitable places to build them.
Describe hydroelectric energy and what it does/ how it works
- from running water
- Dan is needed, water files through tunnels and turns turbines that drive generators to produce electricity.
- once built energy is free, no waste/pollution, can be constantly generated.
- building Dan will flood upstream, damage wildlife and could cause obstruction to public
Describe tidal energy and what it does/ how it works
- from the earths ocean movement.
- tidal Barriers leaves little space for water to get through which turns a turbine creating energy.
- once built is free, no pollution/ waste, tides are predictable, not expensive to maintain.
- few suitable locations, only provide energy 10 hours a day
Describe wave energy and what it does/ how it works
- from waves being blown across the sea.
- works like swimming pool wave machine.
- energy is free, no pollution, not expensive to maintain, produces lots of energy.
- must withstand all weather, must be suitable site and can produce wide range of energy due to different waves.
