Energy Resources Flashcards
Natural Resource
anything that people can use which comes from nature.
Renewable Resource
resource which is replaced naturally and can be used again.
Non Renewable Resource
cannot be readily replaced by natural means on a level equal to its consumption.
Fossil Fuel
general term for buried combustible geologic deposits of organic materials, formed from decayed plants and animals that have been converted to crude oil, coal, natural gas, or heavy oils by exposure to heat and pressure in the earth’s crust over hundreds of millions of years.
Nuclear Fission
main process generating nuclear energy
Nuclear Fusion
nuclear fusion is a nuclear reaction in which two or more atomic nuclei come very close and then collide at a very high speed and join to form a new nucleus.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle
type of vehicle which uses a fuel cell to power its on-board electric motor.
Solar Energy
radiant light and heat from the Sun harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar architecture and artificial photosynthesis.
Wind Energy
wind turbine is a device that converts kinetic energy from the wind into electrical power.
Hydroelectric energy
referring to electricity generated by hydropower; the production of electrical power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water.
Biomass
biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms.
Ethanol (E85)
85% denatured ethanol fuel and 15% gasoline or other hydrocarbon by volume
Geothermal Energy
heat from the Earth
Petroleum
a liquid mixture of hydrocarbons that is present in certain rock strata and can be extracted and refined to produce fuels including gasoline, kerosene, and diesel oil; oil.
Natural Gas
consisting largely of methane and other hydrocarbons, occurring naturally underground
