Energy from moving water Flashcards
What is tidal power?
A tidal barrage is a dam across a river mouth.Water passes through the turbines in the dam as the tide come in and out.
Why are there not a lot of tidal barrages built?
Few barrages have been built because of worries of the ecological impact on the river estuary.
What is hydroelectric power?
It uses energy from the kinetic store of falling water to drive turbines. These power stations do not produce carbon dioxide and the resource will never run out - it is renewable.
What can large dams do?
Flood habitats for people and wildlife.
What is pumped storage?
It is a way of storing excess energy when people are producing. When there is spare electricity the turbines pump the water up to the highest reservoir. When more electricity is needed the water flows down through the turbines again.
