Energy, Fossil Fuels Flashcards
Renewable resources, examples
Once used we can replenish by replanting or recycling (often have to make reusable again , example cleaning water before re-use)
Nonrenewable resources, examples
Once used are no longer available for reuse and cannot be replenished in amount of time to be practical for present society
Oil , rubber, electricity , plastic
Alternative energy examples
Are only a small fraction of all current energy sources . sun wind geothermal , biofuels, nuclear, all have advantages and disadvantages
Fossil fuels
Greatly tied to world economies and to our present lifestyle .Fossil fuel is a general term for buried combustible geologic deposits of organic materials, formed from decayed plants and animals that have been converted to crude oil, coal, natural gas, or heavy oils by exposure to heat and pressure in the earth’s crust over hundreds of millions of years.
Coal, petroleum , natural gas=86% US energy use (25%, 41%, 20%)
How coal formed, geologic age during which it was formed
Originally large swamp forests during Pennsylvanian portion of Carboniferous period , not all organic Matter could decompose, layers formed in similar manner to sedimentary rocks , first peat then lignite then bituminous coal formed, with less percent water and larger percent carbon in that order. Anthracite coal may form with metamorphic pressure -takes longest to form , has highest percent of carbon , is highest quality and burns efficiently-coal that cost most . Number 1 coal usage is power plants
Different types, (stages) of coal including peat, comparative percent carbon of each

?
US Energy and oil consumption, production, reserves
86 %energy use in fossil fuels
US largest oil consumer , mostly transportation , US uses 25-30% of all resources used . Most oil reserves in Middle East

?change our behavior to be more efficient , use less energy
