Energy Flow Flashcards
What are consumers?
Organism that gets food from another organism. There are: •Primary •Secondary •Tertiary etc...consumers
What are producers?
Organism that makes its own food from sun’s energy
What is the 10% Percent Rule?
When an organism is eaten, only ten percent of energy is transferred to the next organism (The other ninety percent is lost in the form of heat).
Which organism (s) has the highest concentration of toxins?
Higher level consumers.
Which organism(s) has the highest amount of biomass/most energy?
Producers
What is symbiosis and the types?
Symbiosis is the relationship among organisms. There are 5 types:
•Predation- One organism benefits while the other one dies (+, X)
•Competition- two or more organisms compete for sources, shelter, etc.
•Parasitism- One organism benefits while the other one is harmed (+, -)
•Commensalism- One organism benefits while the other one neither benefits or is harmed.
•Mutualism- Both organisms benefit (+, +)
Ecosystem Stability:
True or False: Changes in the environment (natural or man made) cannot change the stability of an ecosystem (positive or negative)
False- Changes in environment CAN change the stability of an ecosystem, good or bad.
What is the carbon cycle?
the series of processes by which carbon compounds are interconverted in the environment, chiefly involving the incorporation of carbon dioxide into living tissue by photosynthesis and its return to the atmosphere through respiration, the decay of dead organisms, and the burning of fossil fuels.
What is the nitrogen cycle?
the series of processes by which nitrogen and its compounds are interconverted in the environment and in living organisms, including nitrogen fixation and decomposition.
